Ewing first appeared in these pages in June, when "Swap Talk" detailed the ongoing competition between the former pro skier and the city's other sultan of swinging, Kendall Seifert of the Scarlet Ranch. That piece also described Ewing's plans to open a new club -- identified in a liquor-license application as The Loft -- in the Athmar Park neighborhood. Since that name was subsequently snagged by the former Club Evolution in downtown, Ewing's project has been renamed the Sugar Lounge, according to the Fox 31 piece.
For that story, reporter Jon Bowman interviewed Carole Campbell, a west Denver resident who first voiced her opposition to the new dance club in the Westword letters section on August 24. Although Ewing's liquor-license application is still under review by the Department of Excise and Licenses, Ewing told Bowman that he hopes to open his bar on Halloween. He also emphasized that the Sugar Lounge would not be a strip joint or a swingers club, but would still "be sexy." This may be why he recently reregistered a business with the name of Hot and Curious Entertainment LLC to the West Alameda Avenue address with the Colorado Secretary of State's office.
Neighborhood residents certainly qualify as both hot and curious about the status of Ewing's application — as well as some petitions opposing the liquor license that disappeared after they were submitted to the city. -- Jared Jacang Maher
