A Trio of Cookbook Talks: Top Ten Events on This Week's Culinary Calendar

Author! Author! A trio of chefs -- Ina Gartner, Richard Sandoval and Eric Skokan --will be talking about their new cookbooks this week, and there are many other appetizing events on the culinary calendar. Keep reading for a taste.

Monday, November 17

WaterCourse Foods will be donating a portion of all sales between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. today to WalkDenver. Walk, don't run (or drive) to the restaurant at 837 East 17th Avenue. (Fair warning: the restaurant is having some problems with its website; for more information, call 303-832-7313)

The Sushi Den Autumn Grand Sake Tasting will run from 5:45 to 9:30 p.m. today at the restaurant. The celebration of Japanese cuisine and culture will feature sake masters from the Yamagata region of Japan, who will showcase award-winning sakes paired with selections by master chef Toshi Kizaki. Sake will be paired with izakaya-style selections such as chicken tatsuta-age, miso cod, Sriracha garlic shrimp (all gluten-free) and an assortment of Izakaya Den and Sushi Den sushi and signature rolls. Duo Restaurant will host a Taqueria Pacifica fundraising dinner tonight to benefit Nick Siracusa and his efforts to get his food truck, Taqueria Pacifica, running. For $35, you get two courses and two drinks from Black Shirt Brewery and Proof Wine & Spirits; for more information, head to

Chef Richard Sandoval will be at La Biblioteca from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight to celebrate the launch of his new cookbook, Richard Sandoval's New Latin Flavors. Inspired by dishes served at Sandoval's popular restaurants, the cookbook features more than 100 Latin recipes. The $75 ticket includes a meet and greet with chef Sandoval and a signed copy of his new cookbook, drinks, unlimited appetizers and a $25 gift card for any Sandoval restaurant; you can purchase tickets here.

Wednesday, November 19

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, you can brush up on your culinary skills while learning some holiday classics at the Stir Cooking School Thanksgiving Dinner Class. The session starts at 6:30 p.m. and tuition is $75; find more info at

Ina Garten will be on the Paramount Theatre stage tonight to talk about her latest recipe book, Make It Ahead: A Barefoot Contessa Book. Amanda Faison, food editor at 5280, will interview Garten before giving the audience a chance to ask the culinary star their own questions. Tickets start at $49, get yours here.

Root Down will host its first paleo dinner starting at 6 p.m. tonight. The meal consists of four courses and an amuse-bouche, created by chef Daniel Asher. Reservations are $65 per person with an optional fermented beverage pairing for $20. For reservations, call Root Down at 303-993-4200.

Thursday, November 20

Eric Skokan will be at the Tattered Cover on Colfax Avenue at 7 p.m. tonight to discuss and sign his book, Farm, Fork, Food: A Year of Spectacular Recipes Inspired by Black Cat Farm. His appearance is free.

Axios Estiatorio is holding the final wine dinner in its fall series at 7 p.m. tonight; this one will feature the ancient Greek varieties of Mastroberardino paired with four courses. Dinner is $75; for reservations, call Axios at 720-328-2225.

Friday, November 21

From 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, the McNichols Building will be the scene for the Beaujolais and Beyond Food & Wine Festival. The annual fundraiser for the Rocky Mountain French-American Chamber of Commerce will be a French-themed event featuring twenty of Denver's best restaurants pairing their cuisine with fine French wines; there will be cooking demos as well as live music.
