Man Dead After Another Shooting Near 1400 Lima: Aurora's Riskiest Block? (41)

 
Once again, violence has struck the 1400 block of Lima Street, which at this point has to be in the running for a dubious honor:

It could be the most dangerous stretch of Aurora.

In the latest incident, one man is dead and another is in custody after a fatal shooting.

Unfortunately, such incidents are far from uncommon on this stretch of roadway. This was the third homicide in around six months.

In September 2014, we told you about the murder of Danielle Griego.


Early on the morning of September 16, 2014, as we've reported, police responded to a domestic violence call at 1439 Lima Street. Upon their arrival at the apartment, they found Griego, but not the man said to have been her boyfriend, 44-year-old Elmo Johnson.

He'd reportedly split after choking and abusing Griego — something friends cited by the Aurora Sentinel said had happened numerous times previously. However, the Sentinel maintained that Griego wasn't cooperative with investigators.

Nonetheless, Aurora police are said to have searched for Johnson, but failed to track him down.

The police ultimately left the residence, but they were called back late that same afternoon. According to a police report accessed by the Denver Post, Stephanie Griego, Danielle's mother, visited the apartment to check on her daughter's well-being and was horrified by what she found.

Danielle seemed to be sleeping on the couch. But when her mom pulled back the covers over her, she discovered the young woman was dead of a gunshot wound to the chest — and Johnson was unconscious nearby, having apparently suffered a drug overdose after killing her.

Johnson was hospitalized for his condition but was improved enough by the next day that he was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and felony menacing.

Approximately five months later, as we noted in a February 2015 post, another murder took place in the same quadplex where Griego died.

This time, the victim was identified Alvin Carrethers, 55.

He's said to have died from multiple sharp-force injuries on February 24.

Shortly thereafter, Toni Carrethers was arrested in connection with the case. As noted by the Aurora Sentinel, she has a very lengthy criminal record. However, charges weren't immediately filed against her, and there have been no reports since then of formal accusations having been pressed against her.

View Larger Map This time, the incident is said to have taken place a short distance from the quadplex where Griego and Carrethers died, at 1480 Lima Street.

According to the Aurora Sentinel, officers were called to the scene at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, on a report of a shooting.

There, they found a man dead.

A short time later, a 46-year-old man was arrested in connection with the crime. He's said to have known the victim, with whom he'd gotten into an "altercation."

Thus far, neither the victim nor the man arrested in the crime have been publicly identified. But there's no doubt that the third murder in six months has rattled the residents who live on the 1400 block of Lima Street.
