Change is in the air at Ironton Gallery this weekend, while nearby at Rule, Jacob Feige plays perceptual tricks. And at Belmar in Lakewood, Valkarie Gallery brings whimsy into the mix, just in time for Halloween. Here are the details.
Andy Sweet: Essence
Ironton Studios and Gallery
October 23 through November 24
Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 23

For sculptor Andrew Sweet, a longtime resident at Ironton Studios, Essence represents a milestone for the artist, who says it’s the last time he will exhibit heavy-duty works in stone and steel. It also marks the beginning of the end for the gallery at Ironton, which after sixteen years will hand over the pioneering exhibit space to the Colorado Photographic Arts Center in January. A milestone for Sweet and the second-to-last bow in Ironton’s long goodbye, the show’s opening reception will include live jazz by Greg Harris Vibe Group, food by smileswithsalt.com and drink, as well as a raffle of two Sweet works. There will be a second First Friday/Denver Arts Week reception on November 6.

Jacob Feige: Cutaways
Rule Gallery
October 23 through December 5
Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 23

While Rule Gallery also celebrated a milestone this month with the grand opening of its second outpost in Marfa, Texas, it’s business as usual for Rule here in Denver, where painter Jacob Feige’s Cutaways takes viewers on a visual trip, one canvas at a time. Feige echoes the cutaway technique in film by taping over portions of each work and filling in the uncovered spaces with alternative views.

Karrie York, Tom Sarmo and Kayla Edgar
Valkarie Gallery
October 21 through November 15
Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 23

Plucky Lakewood gallery Valkarie offers a perfect October show of illustration works by Karrie York, Tom Sarmo and Kayla Edgar, who all tell visual stories in their own singular ways. From York’s anthropomorphized animals and Edgar’s whimsical scenes to Sarmo’s spooky "Victorian Peculiar meets Dr. Seuss” fantasies, everything in this exhibit invites families to share in the gallery experience. No tricks, lots of treats.
