Although the Ballpark neighborhood is losing a great restaurant when Lower48 Kitchen closes this weekend, the rest of this stretch of the 2200 block of Lawrence Street is slowly filling out. The Inventing Room opened on Saturday, and yesterday a new neighbor, Max Market, swung open its doors. More than a convenience store but smaller than a full-on supermarket, Max Market looks to fill a definite void in grocery stores in the area.

General manager Dave O'Connor explains that Max Market provides fine foods, organics, fresh produce and grab-and-go items from a breakfast, lunch and dinner deli counter. There's an early-morning menu of breakfast burritos and sandwiches, Boar's Head meats for lunchtime orders and daily specials like meatloaf, roast chicken and lasagna for those looking for hot food to go. "It's our version of a New York-style bodega," he adds.

The market also stocks local products like baked goods from Trompeau Bakery, ice cream from Little Man and coffee from Boxcar Roasters. Max Market is open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
