Openings and Closings

The Midwestwern Saloon Opens Tonight on Tennyson

The Berkeley neighborhood is about to get a taste of the Midwest in the appropriately named Midwestern Saloon, which opens to the public tonight at 5 p.m. The Midwestern is the creation of Andrea and Dan DeShano, industry veterans who grabbed the vacant spot at 3961 Tennyson Street after the Tennyson Street Barbecue, which had taken the place of Big Hoss Bar-B-Q, closed last fall.

The couple has roots in the Midwest — Andrea is from Minnesota and Dan is from Michigan — so their menu will pay homage to regional cuisine from their home states as well as that of Iowa and Ilinois. Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago-style hot dogs will emerge from the scratch kitchen, along with pork tenderloin sandwiches and eventually a tater-tot hot dish and a Friday fish fry.

Dan DeShano was most recently at Milo's Sports Tavern on East Evans Avenue, and Andrea spent two and a half years at the Federal Bar & Grill. Their bar roster will include a dozen rotating tap handles with beers from Colorado and beyond, along with spirits focusing on regional small-batch distilleries.

After tonight, the Midwestern will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to midnight, with later hours on Friday and Saturday nights. Andrea says brunch will also be added beginning next weekend.
