Neil Young and the Promise of the Real will perform two special shows in Telluride Town Park on Friday, September 30, and Saturday, October 1, 2016. These shows mark Young's only stop in Colorado this summer — and the first time he has performed in Telluride. This fact is surprising, considering that Telluride has long been a destination concert stop for big-name singer-songwriters and other artists of Young's ilk.
According to spokesman Brian Eyster, "Planet Bluegrass has been trying to book Neil every single year for more than 25 years! We’ve gotten close a few times, but it’s never quite worked out with Neil’s schedule. So this is a career thrill for all of us. Huge kudos to Steve Gumble and Blues & Brews for helping to finally make this dream happen for us and for all of Telluride."
The shows are a co-production of Lyons's Planet Bluegrass and Telluride Blues & Brews, whose own festival takes place earlier in September. "This is the first time that Planet Bluegrass and Telluride Blues & Brews have worked together on an event," Eyster says. "We’ve done a few big non-festival shows in Telluride Town Park [Phish in 2010, Pretty Lights last year and again this August], but it's great to be collaborating."
The venue, Telluride Town Park, hosts Telluride Bluegrass, Blues & Brews, Telluride Jazz and other festivals. Last spring the town completed work on a new $1.8 million stage in the park, and Telluride Bluegrass was the first major event to use it. Says Eyster: "I had the chance to play dobro during the festival soundcheck, and the stage's acoustics were remarkable."
