Trans Series Her Story Screens to Benefit The Center

Visibility of the LGBTQ community in new media and pop culture continues to rise, and adding to it is the new web series Her StoryThe trans-forward series is getting an in-depth presentation, complete with its creators and talent, and courtesy of the GLBT Community Center of Colorado and the Sie FilmCenter, on August 16 and 17.

Her Story is a six-episode scripted web series that follows the lives of two women, Violet (Jen Richards) and Paige (Angelica Ross), who have given up on finding love in Los Angeles. But when Violet meets Allie (series writer Laura Zak) and Paige meets James (Christian Ochoa), they find challenges, attractions and vulnerabilities in their new romantic opportunities.

Setting it apart from other romantic dramas, Her Story focuses on trans and queer women, making it one of the first series to do so rather than just feature them as side characters.

With a running time of 65 minutes, the entire series will screen at the Sie on August 17 as a benefit for The Center’s transgender program and resources. The screening will also feature a post-screening question-and-answer session, moderated by entertainment reporter Chris Parente, with Zak, Richards, Ross and executive producer Kate Fisher. A free panel will take place the day before, on August 16, at the Center sans screening, but with the same cast members (and moderated by me) for those who can’t make the benefit.

The impact of a series produced by and with members of the LGBTQ community will be one of many topics discussed. We'll also cover the importance of trans actors playing trans characters.

The free filmmaker panel takes place Tuesday, August 16, at 6 p.m. at The Center, 1301 East Colfax Avenue; admission will be on a first come, first serve basis. The screening of Her Story and the Q&A will take place Wednesday, August 17, at 7:15 p.m. at the Sie FilmCenter, 2510 East Colfax. Tickets for that event are $35 and are available at denverfilm.org, Proceeds benefit The Center. To watch the series for free, go to herstoryshow.com.
