January 16, 1938 was a legendary day for swing music lovers. Benny Goodman's Orchestra played the famed Carnegie Hall and, immediately following his band's performance, Count Basie's band battled Chick Webb's band at The Savoy Ballroom.
Our program begins with Kyle Smith presenting an interactive talk about that extraordinary evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Following his talk, The Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra will play three sets separately dedicated to the music of Count Basie, Chick Webb and Benny Goodman's bands from 8 to 11 p.m. [Organizer's description]
