As the Colorado Burlesque Festival shimmies its way into its seventh year, bringing together classic burlesque's legendary queens and the state's best bump-and-grind mistresses and masters, it quickly becomes clear why they do it: for the sheer entertainment of others and, for those within the performers' inner circle, a sense of community. This really is different from a regular hometown show. “A lot of it is about getting new eyes on the legends,” explains longtime Denver burlesque diva Fanny Spankings. “People have the opportunity to see them in person, and that's important, because they are the voices of our burlesque history and the why and the how of it – and how hard it is.”

And there will be legends galore at this year's fest, from headliners such as Judith Stein and Golden resident Gail Winns to an array of talent from all sectors of the burlesque realm: boylesque star Bazuka Joe of the Stage Door Jonnies, Miss Exotic World 2016 Trixie Little, Denver's own Vivienne VaVoom and Baltimore dancer Jacqueline Boxx, who performs in a wheelchair. “Her goal is to bring visibility to disabled performers,” Spankings says. “She tries to make it sensual, but to also take mystery out of it, and that's become sort of a theme for the weekend.” Little, who was recently injured in an accident, might be wheelchair-bound, too, she notes: “Trixie will be teaching a facial-expression class this year since she can't teach dance. That's a big component of burlesque that people forget about – the emoting of the face.”

The Colorado Burlesque Fest will shake things up at an opening-night gala July 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret, 1601 Arapahoe Street, and then it's off and running for the whole weekend, with daily workshops and nightly showcases at various downtown locations, including the big July 9 Colorado Burlesque Festival Spectacular at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Street, and a Sunday Funday Brunch from noon to 2 p.m. July 10 at Crave, 891 14th Street.
