In what’s becoming a quadrennial tradition, the fast-paced 44 Plays for 44 Presidents will begin just before the first presidential debate. Mounted by Boulder’s Square Product Theatre in 2012, 44 Plays returns under the guidance of director Emily K. Harrison, who will lead a collaboration between the theater company and a University of Colorado Boulder Department of Theatre & Dance student ensemble.

The piece, originally crafted by Chicago’s Neo-Futurists performance collective, blazes through the lives of America’s presidents, giving each about two minutes of the audience’s time. What sounds like a premise for a daffy, topical cabaret show belies the substantive content. “While a lot of it is very funny and very satirical, some of it is very serious,” says Harrison. An open discussion on the recurring theme of institutional racism will follow the September 25 performance; the group is planning a watch party for the first presidential debate the following evening.

“The last time we did it with five actors, and now we have an ensemble of thirteen,” Harrison says. “It’s a great play in that respect – you can split it up and do it a lot of different ways. And, of course, the moments that really worked last time, we wound up approaching in completely different ways.” One thing won’t change: There will be a referendum at the end of the show. “The audience votes, and either we do a Trump play or a Hillary play,” Harrison explains.

44 Plays for 44 Presidents opens at 7:30 p.m. September 23 at the University Theatre on the University of Colorado Boulder campus; it continues through October 2. Ticket prices start at $20, with discounts for seniors and students; for complete information, call 303-492-8008 or visit colorado.edu/theatredance/events.
