Anderson .Paak doesn’t forget where he came from or where he wants to go. The rapper, singer, drummer
and bandleader broke into the mainstream with 2016’s Malibu, and audiences flocked to his ’70s-soul
grooves and infectious hybrid hip-hop. .Paak had some powerful help in making his latest record,
including production from Dr. Dre, but he still titled the album Oxnard, after his home town — his third
project named for his California roots. The production value may be sleeker, but .Paak maintains the
ragged-edged, surprising and funky charm that sets him apart. Now, though, he’ll deliver the goods on a
bigger stage — and without having to share the well-deserved spotlight.
