Born and raised (and still living near) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bobby Shew learned the craft of jazz by playing on the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Terry Gibbs, Louie Bellson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Buddy Rich. Bobby also spent many years touring as lead trumpeter for Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Tom Jones, Della Reese, Paul Anka, Robert Goulet, Connie Stevens, Vicky Carr and Steve Allen. He has had numerous Grammy Nominations, has won the Jazz Album of the Year in Australia/New Zealand, has been inducted into the NM Music Hall of Fame, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for The Int’l Trumpet Guild, also the Lifetime Achievement Award for Jazz Education by the JEN group, and recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Elmhurst College in Illinois.
