On their latest tour, the B-52’s are celebrating their more-than-forty-year history as a band, which includes so much more than “Love Shack.” The influential group has endured twists, turns, losses and triumphs — all of it set to dance music from another dimension. The quintet started as a party band out of Athens, Georgia, in the mid-’70s, blasting through genres from retro jangle pop and funk to beach rock and doo-wop, drawing from influences as diverse as campy sci-fi and Yoko Ono. Through all their iterations, and even following the death of founding guitarist Ricky Wilson to complications from AIDS, the B-52’s, including Fred Schneider, Keith Strickland, Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, have stayed true to each other and open-minded about music and performance, leaving the door wide open for experimentation, humor and fun.
