Yvette Marie Stevens may sing “I’m Every Woman,” but she’s a singular talent. The performer and activist better known as Chaka Khan has been a legendary purveyor of funk and R&B anthems for five decades. Her “Through the Fire” was famously flipped and sampled by Kanye West, and she won a Grammy (her tenth) as recently as 2008. The Chicago-born Khan turned 65 in March and just put out a new song called “Like Sugar.” It’s her first single in over a decade, but she keeps it fresh, collaborating with fidget-house producer Switch (formerly of Major Lazer) for a dance-centric, funky number with an exuberant and modern sound.
