When the Dead Kennedys formed in San Francisco four decades ago, it didn’t take long for the punk band’s name to stir up controversy, particularly when the band played a gig on the fifteenth anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination. And there’s no lack of controversial political views on 1980’s Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables; singer and Boulder native Jello Biafra takes lyrical jabs at Jerry Brown (who was governor of California at the time and was re-elected in 2011) on “California Über Alles” and rails against President Ronald Reagan on the single “Bleed for Me.” While the band had a strong eight-year run before splitting up in 1986, three of its members — founder/guitarist East Bay Ray, original bassist Klaus Flouride and drummer D.H. Peligro, who first joined the Kennedys 1981 — started things up again in 2001 and went through a few singers before Ron “Skip” Greer joined a decade ago.
