There’s been a lot of talk lately about new development and other big changes in RiNo that have artists on edge and feeling like they’re being pushed out. But some newer projects, like the studio/gallery/event space Helikon, are remaining true to the original RiNo ideals of providing both affordable space and artistic community. Helikon director Cayce Goldberg, who oversaw the transformation of an old family business into a good-looking art space with its own coffee shop, remains neutral about the area’s raging growth, but he hopes to continue catering to artists in RiNo for as long as he can.
“After I graduated from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design, in 2010, I drifted for a while,” Goldberg remembers. “I guess I never realized how key the artist community is in terms of sharing and discussing work until I left school.” In building Helikon, he took what he saw as the best qualities from both the university and contemporary fine-art models and endeavored to roll them all into one venue.
Shows at the gallery have been all over the place, Goldberg admits, but one constant is the periodic Denizen series, which features new work by Helikon tenants. “The range of work people are doing here is so different across the board,” he says. “We have people doing abstracts, figure painting, portraiture, illustration, lowbrow.... It’s interesting to put all these artists together and see how certain pieces both play off and contrast with each other so well.”
Denizen III, which opens with a reception April 24 from 6 to 10 p.m., reflects one way in which Helikon continues to offer support to local artists. “We sometimes show artists on the national level, but we also tap into artists working here in Denver, and that’s key,” Goldberg notes. Denizen III runs through May 30 at Helikon, 3675 Wynkoop Street. Go to helikongallery.com for more information.
