Denver Zine Fest’s re-emergence in 2015 after several years off was such a rousing success that the Denver Zine Library’s Kelly Shortandqueer saw it as a sign that the zine-making convo would just get bigger — and better. “The zine momentum has been building in a way that Zine Fest hasn’t seen before,” he says. “In the past few years, there’s been a lot more focus on creating your own media. I don’t know if it’s because people are coming back to zines or they’re discovering self-publishing in new ways, but nationally, there’ve been a lot of people who seek access to that. Last year, we [had] exhibitors — from Denver — who I’d never heard of before. The community is growing, and hopefully Zine Fest gets to play a role in that growth.”

The 2016 fest begins at 7 p.m. tonight with a free pre-expo Bike-In Zine Reading in Cheesman Park, essentially an icebreaker under the stars for attendees and exhibitors alike, followed by tomorrow’s vendor show, zine swap, workshops and other fun (including a raffle and a Zine Olympics featuring five different events, from speed-stapling to creative covers), from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist, 690 Colorado Boulevard. And, of course, that all calls for a dance party to wrap everything up, so there’s one of those, too, beginning at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Ratio Beerworks, 2920 Larimer Street. Like everything else, it’s free, but you’re also invited to pick up a Denver Zine Fest pint glass for $7 while you’re there to benefit the fast-growing Zine Library.
