Although Donny McCaslin spent just a few months recording with David Bowie on the singer’s final studio album, Blackstar, the saxophonist was clearly influenced by Bowie. With some of the music from Blackstar still swimming in his head, McCaslin began work on Beyond Now, which was released in October 2016, nine months after Bowie’s death. Beyond Now’s opener was inspired by a song that was recorded during the Blackstar sessions but didn’t make it onto the album; McCaslin and his band, which played with him on Blackstar, also covered “A Small Plot of Land” and “Warszawa.” On his upcoming album, Blow — slated to drop October 5 on Motéma Music — McCaslin channels some of his jazz sensibilities into more of an art-rock sound while still tipping his hat to the late legend.
