Singer-songwriter and crack fiddle player Amanda Shires just released To the Sunset, which veers away from her Americana roots and applies her vibrating soprano to jangle-pop-leaning songs about desire and power. Shires’s MFA in poetry is on display in lyrics as complex as they are catchy: “I wanted out of Alamogordo/Kept the party dress in the glove department,” she sings on the pavement-peeling “Eve’s Daughter.” Fans should stick around for the headlining set by Shires’s husband, Jason Isbell, and his band the 400 Unit. Isbell broke out as a singer-songwriter with 2013’s acclaimed Southeastern, but the 400 Unit includes such eminent Southern musicians as Jimbo Hart and Shires herself. The band will release Live From the Ryman in October, which includes favorites “Cover Me Up” and “Cumberland Gap.”
