Murder by Death

On its latest album, Midwestern band Murder by Death has added a twist to its dark Americana. The Other Shore, the band’s eighth LP, is a space Western about a lovers’ disagreement and a dying Earth. Frontman Adam Turla said the band looked to move its “spacier” sounds to the fore while “still making it desolate.” The Bloodshot Records indie-rock outfit has long dealt in fantasies that reveal darker aspects of reality, embodied in its annual five-show stand (which continues on January 18, 19 and 20) at the historic Stanley Hotel, made famous by Stephen King’s The Shining. The band’s creepy-yet-classic costumed affair has become a sepia-toned tradition that attracts fans and revelers from across the country.
