Overcoats, otherwise known as Hana Elian and J.J. Mitchell, started as a folk project after the two amateur singers met at a liberal-arts college and began writing songs sopping with sincerity. They eventually traded in their acoustic guitars for drum machines and electronic instruments, and their sound has morphed into stripped-down soulful pop that was chosen — to the delight of the public-radio set — for an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. While Overcoats’ worried-eyebrow earnestness can teeter on aggravating, the quality of the band’s songwriting overcomes even the most trite lyrics about tortured love. Yes, the act is still green — at times painfully so. But Elian and Mitchell’s persistence has led them to produce a compelling sound that continues to evolve for the better.
