Pee-wee's Big Adventure

Pee-wee's Big Adventure

Warner Bros.

Just like Pee-wee Herman, the Texas-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is a rebel, and the renegade theater chain is known for creating events that turn the act of watching movies into an extra-good time. In preparation for its long-gestating new theater -- which is scheduled to be built near Sloan's Lake -- the Alamo has teamed up with the West Colfax Business Improvement District for a little taste of that Alamo rebel spirit: a free outdoor screening of Tim Burton’s much-loved ode to summer, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.

“Pee-wee's adoration of his bike and [his girlfriend] Dottie's addiction to the drive-in are some of the best elements of the film, so why not take the family on a bike ride to an outdoor film?” asks Alamo Denver creative manager Steve Bessette, and indeed, gathering your brood on bicycles is highly encouraged. Once at the park, you can expect lots of family-friendly games; a Pee-wee costume and dance contest; music by the Steele Blues Band and Johnny Barber & the Rhythm Razors; and some cold beer for sale, with the proceeds benefiting Girls Incorporated of Metro Denver. Sorry, Pee-wee, no tequila.

The party starts at 5 p.m. August 29 on the south side of the park, near 17th Avenue and Stuart Street. Bands perform starting at 6:15 p.m., followed by the film at dusk. For more information, go to
