Eight years of “Tighten Up” and “Gold on the Ceiling” soundtracking every car commercial and action-movie trailer has come to this: the Shelters, aka the melodic blues-rock band your dad loves, even if he doesn’t know it yet. Formed in Los Angeles in 2014, the band’s big break came courtesy of Steven Van Zandt’s radio show and Tom Petty, who invited the Shelters to support his Mudcrutch tour and co-produced the group’s 2016 self-titled debut. The Shelters make swaggering tough-guy rock, shamelessly trading in rock-and-roll clichés (rebel hearts, being “born to” do something, rippling synths reminiscent of “Baba O’Riley”) and, in a few cases, pulling it off. “Born to Fly” channels Oasis’s early-’90s just-try-and-stop-us bombast; “Liar” sounds like a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club homage. The members’ omnipresent leather jackets complete the look.
