Patrick Stickles’s Titus Andronicus takes its name from Shakespeare and makes bangers out of archaic historical narratives and rock operas about manic depression. Yet Stickles balances his lofty aspirations by writing high-energy punk melodies, turning complex concepts into mosh-pit anthems. On fifth album A Productive Cough, Stickles focuses on slower tempos, but the fewer, longer songs unspool their messy tangles as they would in a live jam. The frontman sings like a demonic Conor Oberst and covers Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” turning his loathing outward onto political villains.
