Flick Pick

The Flashback Wednesdays series at the Regency Tamarac Square is a movie nostalgiaphile's delight, not least because the fare tends to go easy on the cerebral cortex while providing a maximum of entertainment value. That's the appeal of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Amy Heckerling's terrific 1982 feature about Southern California adolescents hanging out at the mall and obsessing about--what else?--their sex lives. It's a surprisingly candid comedy with an appealing cast that includes such future stars as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold and Forest Whitaker, and a few worthies who fell by the wayside, such as Robert Romanus and Phoebe Cates. Look for a very young Sean Penn as an appealing stoner named Spicoli, among other delights. Fast Times screens at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 3, at the Regency, 7777 East Hampden Avenue. The series continues through August with Spaceballs (August 10), Moulin Rouge (August 17), Stanley Kubrick's mind-bending A Clockwork Orange (August 24) and Saturday Night Fever (August 31).
