Block & Larder

When brothers Aaron, Lucas and Jason Forgy decided to open another restaurant, rather than a second location of Freshcraft, their popular craft-beer hub, they branched out to Berkeley with Block & Larder, a higher-end restaurant with an emphasis on in-house butchery. Following a steakhouse model, prices run high – not as high as at classic steakhouses, but higher than at Freshcraft -- and sides and sauces cost extra. Unlike at steakhouses, however, steak isn’t the primary focus here, with proteins ranging from bison short ribs to lamb shank. With exposed brick walls, a popular bar, and bold canvases that add a Lichtenstein-like feel, Block & Larder is a comfortable place to hang out, even if entrees don’t always live up to the price.
