The Bottesini Project, the completely improv project spearheaded by Creative Music Works' Paul Riola, is taking its unique show on the road. Riola is taking the concept -- spontaneous compositions created by like-minded musicians in a formal jam context -- to San Francisco on Friday, May 15, at the Starry Plough in Berkeley. Given the nature of the project, the lineup of the ensemble is
constantly rotating. This time around, saxophonist Riola will be joined by a cast of virtuosos including renowned guitarist Fred Frith, violinist Carla Kihlstedt (Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum, Tom Waits), bassist Keenan Wayne (Billy Martin), drummer Scott Amendola (Nels Cline Singers, Charlie Hunter) and pedal steel player Glenn Taylor (Ron Miles, Ginger Baker), the only holdovers from Bottesini's previous performance. Before the Bottesini Project heads to the Bay, you can catch the next performance at the Mercury Cafe on Saturday, February 21, with 3ology and Aenka.
