This week's Messagecolumn
spotlightsRocky Mountain News
columnist Dave Krieger, who's been trying to draw attention to Denver's gang problem from an unlikely location: theRocky
's sports section. Since he began his campaign, his paper has provided greater coverage to gang issues that aren't directly linked to the murder of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams -- and today, theDenver Post
got into the act, too, placing anarticle
about Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey's request for $460,000 in additional funds to fight gangs on page one.
As for Krieger, his column today is pure sports; it concerns the Colorado Rockies. But this focus only increases the odds that he'll get back to the gang topic in one of his next offerings. Plenty of Rocky readers will be unhappy if this proves to be the case. However, the more often gangs are in the headlines, the more likely it is that Krieger will continue his crusade. -- Michael Roberts
