We've been publishing their interviews on Show and Tell, our arts and culture blog, but wanted to share their plans for New Year's Eve here....
Emily Tarquin from Off-Center@The Jones: I'm sort of a traditionalist when it comes to holidays -- well, if I celebrate them. There are times where I've just skipped holidays or done something completely irrelevant -- I'd rather buy (someone) a gift on a random day then on Christmas. New Year's, I'll be looking for a glass of champagne, maybe a disco ball, a large group of friends to count down with, and a kiss at midnight. If I could get the whole world to stand outside in the snow and simultaneously sing "Auld Lang Syne," I'd do that, too.Comedian and Fine Gentleman Sam Tallent: I'm not working. I've worked the last three or four years. Standups always work for New Year's; it's just part of the institution. But under guidance or duress, whatever you want to call it, from my girlfriend, I'm taking this year off. I'm going to Michigan, I'm meeting her parents for Christmas, and then we're spending New Year's in a cabin somewhere on a lake up there. They have many lakes. We're pretty much just going to be intimate and be comfortable and snuggle. New Year's Eve I don't like; I'm not a big party-party-get-wasted guy anymore. I used to love to rage, but now that I spend all my time in bars, I just don't want to hang out with bar people as much. So I'm going to spend it probably on drugs overlooking water, hopefully with my head in my girlfriend's lap. I'm really looking forward to New Year's Day, because they're releasing all the Arrested Developments, so I think we're going to spend our entire day in bed under the influence of narcotics watching Arrested Development. It's gonna be very simple. I used to want to go out and party and have all the fun, but I've gotten so old in my years now. and I don't like the hubbub. I'm going for solitude, tranquility. It'll be nice.Andrew Novick of Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast, Warlock Pinchers and GetYourGoing: My PowerPoint project, GetYourGoing.ppt. I'm opening up for Itchy-O Marching Band at 3 Kings, so I'm putting together a quite interesting and unique PowerPoint presentation for that. I never talk about the theme of what I'm gonna present, because I want people to come see what I'm presenting without knowing anything and hope that it's gonna be good. It kinda goes back to my other thing about getting lucky. So I never say what it's gonna be about, but the way that I show it will also be interesting. It's something I've never done before, so I can only give you mysterious clues.Keith Garcia, programming manager for the Sie FilmCenter:I never do anything; I'm not a party person. I don't really like the countdown thing. But someday, if I end up in a relationship, I will happily become a New Year's party person. But from the last few years of being single on New Year's -- it sucks to watch everyone else be like, "baby, I love you! Mwah." Good for you, but, unless you're going to share your boyfriend with me, please don't do that in front of me. (Laughs.)
But I have a friend who's working a concert and I might go to that. But I don't know -- I tend to hate all the bands that get New Year's Eve play, locally. (Laughs.) And I have plenty of TV on DVD that I need to watch, so New Year's is a good night to bust through a season.Musician and DIY venue operator Gregg Ziemba: It's a funny thing; I'm playing up in Steamboat -- I fill in (on drums) sometimes for this funk band called Rowdy Shadehouse. They are a really cool band -- it's different. It's like the "workhorse" band: They play for like, hours. It's fun to do because it's like a workout. You go in there, wearing your little shorts and no shirt and play for four hours. (Laughs.) Then you get to party with all of these crazy people in Steamboat who love funk music.Sara Century from Night Nurses, Baby Hair, and Ladybug Fest: I'm going to stay inside and hide from all of the drunk people, because drunk people scare the shit out of me. I'll probably just work the whole night or something. I'll probably just write or draw or play my guitar and just be really happy that I'm not outside watching people throw up on the sidewalk.Cortney Lane Stell, RMCAD gallery director and curator:I don't have my plans yet, but I will definitely howl at the moon at midnight. Probably for as long as I can. I did it a couple of years ago: Pictureplane was playing at the Meadowlark, and there were a bunch of people outside, and when it hit midnight, we just started howling, and I think it lasted for maybe half an hour. It was such a great release of, I don't know, energy or tension or just kind of being a little mischievous, you know, making as much noise as you can. But also at points during the howling, it almost became like an om meditation because your voices kind of sync up. So I've made it a tradition since then.
