Perrish Cox is no longer a member of the Denver Broncos. The team cut him in September, allegedly because of on-field issues, and not because he had been charged with two sex crimes after allegedly fathering the child of his rape victim.

The accusation is scheduled to be explored in Cox's trial, slated to start today.

As Kyle Garratt reported last July, Cox's arrest affidavit, paints a shocking portrait. According to the document, the alleged victim told police she'd wound up at Cox's Lone Tree apartment because a friend was dating the player at the time. Also on hand were defensive back Cassius Vaughn, Cox's then-roommate, and receiver Demaryius Thomas, who she recalls kissing and groping her when she blacked out from the effects of four drinks or so.

The next morning, the woman woke up feeling as if she'd had sex, and she was right; she subsequently discovered that she was pregnant. However, she couldn't remember the act itself, prompting a call to the cops. Officers collected DNA evidence from Cox, Thomas and Vaughn, who claimed to have been asleep during the incident. The results? Cox was determined to have fathered the woman's child.

Cox, who had reportedly denied having sex with the woman, faces two felony charges: sexual assault on a helpless victim and sexual assault on a victim incapable of appraising her condition. The sentencing range is huge: two years to life.

Despite his legal troubles, Cox was in uniform during the most recent NFL preseason, and watching him play against the Arizona Cardinals was a nauseating experience for many fans. However, his performance was just bad enough to give Broncos cover to claim that he was pink slipped for football reasons, and not because having an accused rapist on the same team as squeaky-clean Tim Tebow would have caused a PR nightmare of Biblical proportions.

The trial of Perrish Cox is expected to continue throughout the week. In the meantime, here's the aforementioned affidavit.
