Photos: Ten Colorado-connected funny people

Yesterday in this space, we nodded to ten Colorado-connected hotties, ingenues and reality-TV stars. But our square state is known for funny business, too. Turns out the list of notables who were born or lived here includes lots of notable comedians and comic actors -- some hugely famous, others getting there. Check out ten big laugh-getters below. Tim Allen: Allen was born in Denver before relocating to Michigan after the death of his father and his mom's remarriage. He subsequently found fame as the star of the long-running sitcom Home Improvement, which never struck us as particularly funny, and can currently be seen in the modest hit Last Man Standing, which is actually set in Denver -- and isn't that amusing, either. Fortunately, his filmography includes Galaxy Quest, an underrated flick if ever there was one, and the assorted Toy Story whizbangs, which are so good he can pretty much coast from here on out. Roseanne: The woman originally known as Roseanne Barr was born in Salt Lake City but moved to the Denver area at age eighteen. She first made her name in stand-up comedy at local clubs, then made the leap to the big time with Roseanne, a situation comedy smash that she's never been able to top or match. More recently, she ran for the 2012 presidency on the "Green Tea Ticket." In case you haven't seen the news lately, she didn't win. Howey, a Texas native who moved to Denver during high school and attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, has appeared on a slew of TV shows (such as Reba) and movies (like Bride Wars) over the years, most of them fairly unmemorable. But he's making a name for himself as Kevin Ball, a regular character on the Showtime series Shameless. He's hilarious and hunky on a program that deserves more attention than it gets. T.J. Miller: Miller, who was born in Denver and attended East High School, has gotten some prime screen time in flicks such as She's Out of My League and My Idiot Brother. But while he's certainly gone Hollywood in the literal sense, he continues to carry a torch for the Mile High City, as evidenced by "Denver," a video he made earlier this year. Represent! Bill Murray: Murray's connections to the Denver area revolve around his attendance at Regis College -- an institution of higher learning that apparently made a big impression on him, since he returned for a college reunion there this past summer. But any link to the man who gave us Caddyshack, Groundhog Day and one of the greatest movie cameos of all time (duh, Zombieland) is well worth cherishing. Trey Parker: The pride of Denver, Evergreen, Conifer, CU-Boulder and, of course, South Park, Parker has managed to parlay his piercing wit and fondness for saying inappropriate things in gut-busting ways into a career that's made waves on the TV (need we mention the title of the show again?), the stage (The Book of Mormon) and the big screen (Team America: World Police, featuring the longest puppet-on-puppet sex scene of all time). Mary Jo Catlett: Catlett, a Denver native, has one of those faces most of us instantly recognize, even if we have no clue about her name or what shows she's graced. She's probably best known for playing housekeeper Pearl Gallagher on Diff'rent Strokes, which starred Gary Coleman, another celeb who lived briefly in Colorado. But the younger generation (and those acquainted with a certain herb) will recognize her voice as that of Mrs. Puff on SpongeBob SquarePants. Kelly Bishop: A Colorado Springs native, Bishop first made her mark as an original cast member in A Chorus Line, launching her on a career that's included work on the stage, as well as screens of assorted sizes. She's appeared in movies such as An Unmarried Woman and Dirty Dancing, but she earned her place on this list because of her hilariously brittle performances in two TV series: Gilmore Girls, where she played the most-often steely matriarch of the clan, and the current ABC Family program Bunheads, created by Gilmore auteur Amy Sherman-Palladino. Kristen Schaal: Schaal, who was born in Longmont, is suddenly everywhere. She's gone from Flight of the Conchords to a recurring role on 30 Rock as, arguably, the world's most annoying person ever -- and that's the point. But some of her funniest moments have been as a special correspondent on The Daily Show. Her husband, Rich Blomquist, is a writer for the program, which means, we hope, that she'll continue to pop up at Jon Stewart's desk for many years to come. Matt Stone: Remember all that stuff we wrote about Trey Parker a little while ago? Well, it pretty much goes for Parker, too -- except that he was born in Houston but raised in Littleton and attended Heritage High School. Plus, he looks mighty good in a dress like the one he wore to the 2000 Academy Awards. Just sayin'.
