10 Things to Do for $10 in Denver This Weekend (6 Free!), May 22-25

Although it's hard to tell from the weather, summer is almost here., and starting Monday, you can wear all the white you want. Over the next few days, you have two choices: let the rain keep you down or ignore it and do what you should be doing over Memorial Day weekend— having fun. You can party by a creek, at the beach and protesting, and let summer know we're ready for it. Check out the Westword calendar for more to do, and drop a comment if we forgot to mention anything.

28th Annual Boulder Creek Festival at Boulder Central Park (all day Friday-Monday, free)
Unofficially kick off summer in the creek up in Boulder. This four-day festival is huge and features over 500 vendors to keep you fed and boozy. There's going to be plenty of music to groove to, carnival rides for the fam and the rubber duck race, which is one of the fest's claims to fame. 

Roll: Heros and Villians at EXDO Event Center (9 p.m. Friday, $5)
This monthly roller skate party embraces the power of Denver Comic Con tonight and invites you to dress up to roll down. Comic Con is expensive, but this is event is free before 10 p.m. so put on that cape. And if you can't harness the force of four wheels, they've got ping pong and karaoke too. It would be cool if someone in a Batman costume sang some Wesley Willis.

Drunk Wedding Special Screening with Nick Ross at Alamo Drafthouse (10 p.m. Friday, $5)
Local boy Nick Ross has funny in his bones, and the trailer for his new movie, Drunk Wedding, proves it. Check out the local premier of the raunchy flick with Ross at the Alamo tonight. It's cool because you can get drunk while you watch it, and cruise the light rail home. 

March Against Monsanto 4th Annual Family Friendly Day of Action and Street Rally at State Capitol Building (9 a.m. Saturday, free)
Genetically modified organisms are a concern to many people, but it's up to the few of those who show up to the rally today to make changes. Huddle the family up around some poster boards, make some 'HELL NO GMO' signs and make your way to the capital for a day of fun and change. Meet some new community groups, hear some speeches, wave at passing cars and hear some live tunes as well. 

Inaugural Malcolm X Black Unity Celebration at City Park (10 a.m. Saturday, free)
Malcolm X was born on May 19, 1925. To honor what would have been the activist's ninetieth birthday and bring the community together, welcome Denver's first Malcolm X Black Unity Celebration to City Park. We can agree unity is something we all need right now, so come out to hear local and national poets and musicians, spoken word performances and speeches in honor of the Malcolm X. Pack a picnic and check it out. 

Denver Day of Rock at 16th Street Mall (2:30 p.m. Saturday, free)
Amp the Cause figured out how to raise money for local children's charities, and today they bring Denver an entire day of rock. Twenty-five bands span five stages for a day of fun and giving back to the community. It's totally free to show up and will be super fun to see the 16th Street Mall transformed into a music festival. Check out the line-up of sounds here, and of course there will be beer and food trucks galore.

Crush City at The Savoy Event Center (8 p.m. Saturday, $7)
This is going to be an epic night of comedy with people like local legend Hippieman, Nathan Lund, Janae Burris and many more. Never ever let a weekend go by without making your ribs sore from laughter. 

Comic-Con Cosplay Costume Contest at The Monkey Barrel (8 p.m. Saturday, free) 
As stated previously, Denver Comic Con is expensive, but there's always ways around that. Come to the Monkey Barrel to hang out with Comic Con-type folks dressed up to the nines. There's $100 bucks for the winner, but the real prize is a fun night on the town with a bunch of nerds. The Wizard's Chest is going to be there handing out prizes too, so lace up your boots and strut your self down. 

RiNo Beach Club at EXDO Events Center (12 p.m. Sunday, free)
Put some sunscreen on your nose and flip-flop your way down to the beach in the heart of RiNo. How'd they get a beach in RiNo, you might ask? Don't think about it; just accept it. We're unofficially kicking off the start of summer, and no activity says summer like the beach — even if it rains. The party goes on all summer, but the kick off is the one to be at. Better start doing pushups now. 

Sunday BBQ Series at Larimer Lounge (3 p.m. Sunday, $10)
BBQ's are also a summer must, so get down to the Larimer Lounge and tap your foot with a hamburger in your hand. The Strawberry Runners play that dreamy pop music, which is going to fun sound to kick off this years BBQ series. The Savage Blush, Eye and the Arrow and JOBLESS are going to be there too, so go have yourself a good time.
