She's the epitome of badass babe, known for kicking ass, being sassy and doing it all in style. We don't know what she'll be saying during her keynote, but we honestly don't care. We'd gladly accept Ms. Grier as our leader any day of the week.
LUCEO's Altered States: The Way We Live Today at Indy Ink (Friday, free) LUCEO Images has been making a name for itself by providing some of the best photography this country has to offer. While only one of the members, Matt Slaby, is based here in Denver, his work alone is enough for a full-blown show. Slaby and the rest of the group will have their talent on display tonight in honor of Colorado's month of photography, and we guarantee you'll walk away impressed.Fancy Tiger presents Denver Made, featuring James Cromwell Holden, at Fancy Tiger (Friday, free) Speaking of the month of photography, Fancy Tiger is throwing together a big show as well. James Cromwell Holden, whose name you might recognize from some DJ nights, his band Astreo Moveo and as an all around ridiculously nice dude, will be showing off his other passion, photography.
Tomte Craft Grand Opening and art show at Tomte's (4335 West 41st Avenue, Friday, Free) Tomte Modern Craft will be celebrating its move and reopening this weekend by throwing a party. On top of showing off the new digs, they shop will also be showcasing some new craft art from Elena Stonaker. It should prove to be a welcome addition to First Friday over on the west side.
Fashion Denver's March First Friday at Fashion Denver (Friday, free) Speaking of first Friday, Fashion Denver will be hosting some local designers showing off their spring collections. This is awesome news for those of us who are sick of all the restricting, winter clothes. A paper doll station will also be set up, and the night will be finished off with a performance from Chella Negro. Yansan: 100 Years of Womyn's Struggle, Ceremony and Sword at Sellars Project Space (Friday, free) Honestly, the title had us at "sword," but if you're not so easily persuaded, then perhaps the fact this show will feature a wide selection of women artists of color from around the country will. There will also be a big range in styles, from photography to poster design and even some sculptures.
Frozen Dead Guy Days in Nederland (Friday-Sunday, price varies) While the term "price varies" might scare people away, remember, this is Nederland we're talking about, not some swanky bar in LoDo. You'll be able to hit up most of the events this weekend for free or under $10, including a disco party on Friday night, a pancake breakfast on Saturday and plenty of other activities. Oddly, one of the only things you won't be able to do for under $10 is check out the actual frozen dead guy they're talking about -- but when you're drunk and full of pancakes, who cares?Five Denver Authors at Dikeou Collection (Saturday, free) Oren Silverman will be hosting Five Denver Authors tonight, an event that hopes to showcase a small collection of Colorado authors who are releasing books over the coming weeks. Once there, you'll find yourself privy to readings of poetry and prose, and you'll be given a shot to check out just a few of Denver's writers.
Denver Record Collector's Spring Expo 2011 at Northglenn Ramada Plaza and Convention Center (Sunday, $2) Record collector's expos aren't just for nerdy music types anymore. As the media consumption of the general population has diversified, so have the shows. While vinyl nerds will have plenty to look at throughout the day, fans of pop culture will be pleasantly surprised by the copious amounts of media, memorabilia and posters lining the walls.Machines Like Us Festival at Mary Miller Theatre (Sunday, $9 for students) While the general population will have to cough up $14 to check out the ridiculous Machines Like Us show, student will get their shot for a mere $9. The show is a celebration of the ninetieth anniversary of the term "robot," and as the name implies, is indeed a celebration of robots. A selection of short plays and one longer one, Getting Betta, will be running today.
