On Sunday, May 18, the Boulder County AIDS Project will join with the Interfaith AIDS Coalition of Boulder for the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial. This is the 31st annual commemoration, and people will gather at 6:45 p.m. at the BCAP office -- located at 2118 14th Street in Boulder -- for a silent walk through downtown Boulder to the AIDS Memorial Garden on Boulder Creek, with a stop on the Courthouse lawn for a few words remembering those who have lost their battle against AIDS.

A week later on May 24, BCAP will host a far less solemn event: "Big Top: A Springtime Circus Extravaganza," its sixth annual variety show and community celebration promoting HIV awareness and prevention. "We have been really blessed to be supported by the community and until today, all of our shows have sold out, so we hope for a big crowd," says Frank O' Cana, HIV prevention director, coordinator of the Atlas program and director of the show.

The show will feature seventeen community members doing comedy, drag, instrumental, vocal and other performances. Drag queen character Taylor Park -- who has been volunteering with BCAP since 2007 and has been part of all the big Top shows -- will be hosting the event. "I love seeing the audience indulge in an evening of great acts and delights," says Park. "BCAP and Atlas provide HIV information, services and programming to our community. And knowledge is power. And power is sex. So knowledge is sexy."

But "Big Top: A Springtime Circus Extravaganza" is more than a night of fabulous sights and songs. "It's a community involvement celebration," says O'Cana, "but most of all, a celebration of particularly those volunteers who have very busy lives but are still contributing their time, their skills and their talent to make something like 'Big Top: A Springtime Circus Extravaganza' available for the community, while filling a need that still exists for people who are on a daily basis struggling with managing something like living with HIV."

And for the first time this year, Big Top will be on the stage at eTown Hall, located at 1535 Spurce Street in Boulder. The 18+ show will start at 6.30 p.m. on May 24; tickets are $20 and can be purchased though the eTownHall website . For more information, visit the BCAP website.
