Interested? The registration deadline is tomorrow at 10 p.m.; artists will get their skateboard templates on Friday, July 20; decks will be available on August 1, and finished artwork for the show and auction will be due on September 6. The event -- date and venue yet to be announced -- will be held in early October.
"This is our fifth year and we're really excited and looking to do some different stuff than we've done in the past," says AIGA Bordo Bello director Luke Giltner. "We're going to have a halfpipe and some skateboard ramps set up with interactive graphics, and we already have a lot of great artists in the mix."
Artists can choose from one of three skateboard shapes -- popsicle, cruiser or old-school -- and can opt to either decorate them DIY style or have BoardPusher professionally print their designs from a template. Registration starts at $15 for basic blank decks and caps out at $50 for professionally-printed decks.
"Five years ago we were in a little gallery over in the Santa Fe Arts District and had 50 participants; last year we had over 250 participants, over 600 people came to the show, and we raised over $20,000 for the AIGA Colorado mentorship programs," Giltner says. "It's grown exponentially, and the local and national art, design, and skateboard communities have really embraced us and shown us some love."All submitted decks will be displayed and put up for auction. The concept, theme, materials and techniques are wide open. You can draw, collage, paint, silkscreen, sculpt, reshape, create a design on the computer and adhere a printed transfer to the bottom of your deck, whatever -- it's your call! The board does not have to be useable when you are done.
We suggest you leave the top 2 holes of your board open for the gallery to mount (this works for boards oriented both horizontally and vertically). However, if you decide to do something else, just be sure there is a way for them to hang it. You are responsible for the cost of materials for your board.
BUT... we would like you to please refrain from using sexually explicit language, profanity, or imagery that could be construed as a copyright infringement, as well as any offensive imagery or overtly sexual imagery. Any decks containing any of the items above will not be displayed.
Also, stuff can not come off your board more than 3 in.; everything must be securely attached and there can be no extra pieces to your board mounted to your deck that will make it larger than its actual size.
