Gallery Sketches: Art Events in Denver for the Weekend of April 24-26

In Denver galleries and art museums, this will be a weekend for goodbyes both low-key and loud (including a final Mothersbaugh marathon at MCA Denver). And as the town’s extended Month of Photography begins to wind down, novices and experts alike are invited to get their hands on primitive cameras they can make themselves, as part of the annual Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day. Here’s a guide to a picture-perfect weekend.

Matt Scobey: Tranquilo, Closing Party and Planter Sale
Dateline
2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 25
Denver artist Matt Scobey took over Dateline gallery for a short residency after returning to town from Mexico City, where he participated in an exchange as a 2015 Biennial of the Americas Ambassador. During that time, he continued to experiment with work in concrete, an endeavor that included creating functional, half-shell planters. Scobey invites the public to come hang out, have a look at his completed work and — because they’re irresistible — maybe purchase a pre-planted arrangement during a relaxed afternoon farewell reception.

31 Hours of Myopia

In the months since Mark Mothersbaugh’s grand exhibit Myopia opened at MCA last October, it began to feel as if the Devo founder and polymath creative had always been a part of our local culture. But reality is now setting in: Because the show is packing up and going on tour after this weekend, the museum is throwing a long, long, purely MCA-style shindig, with ongoing exhibit tours and fun activities that start at opening Saturday and go all night and into the next day. You’ll want to plan your visit; the schedule follows.

Processus, a member-driven community artist workspace and darkroom, celebrates the beauty and simplicity of pinhole photography with a Saturday coffee social and camera-making workshop led by resident photographer Christopher R. Perez and Denver camera-builder and artist Michael Pastur, whose hand-built cameras are currently on exhibit in the facility gallery. Bring a container — an oatmeal box or soda can will do — and learn how to make your own on Saturday, then take some pictures and tour Processus on Sunday.

The Colorado Photographic Arts Center also gets into the DIY spirit of Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day with all-ages workshops at the RMCAD campus in Lakewood, with help from Tilt Shift’s pinhole expert. Those already equipped with pinhole cameras are also invited to shoot and print their photographic handiwork, and Colorado Springs photographer Heather Oelklaus will be offering tours of her giant-sized pinhole-camera truck, Little Miss Sunshine.
