Gallery Sketches: Four New Shows in Denver for the Weekend of March 13-15

Month of Photography 2015 powers on this weekend, with new shows opening in Curtis Park and around town. Meanwhile, Denver favorite Ravi Zupa, an old-world master in twenty-first-century skin, will introduce his fifth exhibition at Black Book Gallery. 


Analog: Alternative Processes and the Evocative Range of Photography
Mike Wright Gallery
Through April 16
Closing reception: 6 to 9 p.m. April 16

Mike Wright jumps into Month of Photography with a meaty show examining the power of works created using analog photographic techniques and processes. Jeff Klapperich, a Denver native now working in Brooklyn, provides the show’s central inspiration — the chemistry inherent in the non-digital world — with his Metamorphosis series, setting the stage for additional works by Joe Addison, Carol Golemboski, Bill Adams, Galina Kurlat, Ted Preuss and Keith Brenner. Analog opened last night and runs through April 16, when a second reception will wrap things up.

Ravi Zupa: The Calm

Black Book Gallery christens its new home on Elati Street in the Baker neighborhood with its fifth solo show from local artist Ravi Zupa, who’s wowed collectors at Scope in Miami and New York and exhibited work internationally — though he chooses to live and work in Denver. The Calm juxtaposes a powerful new sculpture series featuring assemblage sculptures of guns created from typewriter parts and pen nibs with new paintings and drawings rendered in Zupa’s unique mashup of old-world and modern imagery.

Showpen Projects, Off the Hand That Feeds
The Temple

The Temple in Curtis Park opens up its gallery space for a Month of Photography showcase from Showpen, a Denver artist incubator in transition, that focuses on work from Tamara Zibners and Ken Trujillo, two artists who transform imagery from their commercial work (Zibners worked as a photographer for a medical examiner, while Trujillo shoots for a mannequin company) into personal, fine-art work.

Obscure
Processus
March 14 through April 14
Opening reception: 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 14

Also at the Temple, the newly opened Processus community arts workshop presents Obscure, a MoP show curated by facility directors Viviane Le Courtois and Christopher R. Perez featuring modified or fabricated cameras, photographic objects and silver prints showing the obscure and strange side of life. Not only is this a great opportunity to tour Processus, but it’s also only a short hike away from RedLine, where MoP shows Playing With Beauty and Role Play are also hosting receptions.
