Summer is here, and three Denver galleries have responded with exhibits that bring the sunshine and activity of the season indoors or, in one case, unloose work created under a strict set of rules over the winter and spring. Enjoy the long evenings of the solstice by taking in these three shows.
Jenniffer Omaitz, Shifting Spaces
Hinterland Art Space
June 19 through July 10
Opening reception: 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, June 19
Cleveland installation artist Jenniffer Omaitz fills Hinterland with site-specific, three-dimensional wall pieces that capture movement in a frenzied blend of found-object assemblage, drawing and painting for this summer show. If you can’t make the opening, there will be a second reception from 6 to 10 p.m. on First Friday in July.
Yunior Hurtado Torres, Rico y Sabroso
Mike Wright Gallery
June 19 through July 25
Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 19
Cuban artist Yunior Hurtado Torres’s portraits pop with tropical color in this show of summer-ready oil paintings and drawings at Mike Wright Gallery. The artist’s first U.S. exhibition, Rico y Sabroso — “rich and tasty” — conjures the spirit of Cuba with a modern eye. The gallery continues the international flavor of the show by also featuring work by Anna Bocek of Poland and Sabine Danze of France.

Abecedarian Gallery
June 19 through August 1
Opening reception: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 19
Abecedarian gallerist, book artist and curator Alicia Bailey gathered an international collection of new handmade artist books inspired by the Artists’ Book Ideation Card Decks, a double set of cards created by Barbara Tetenbaum and Julie Chen that combine book-making aspects such as structure, layout and technique with adjectives to provide prompts. The disciplined, deck-controlled results will remain on display through the end of July.
