You can find new artwork wherever you go this weekend, from the Art District on Santa Fe to the co-ops of the Navajo Street Art District and the cultivated wilds of River North. Here are some of the hot spots...and hot shows.
Modern Structure
Space Gallery
Through July 2
Space kicks off the summer this weekend with a strong group show of new works from Howard Hersh, Krista Svalbonas, Steven Baris, Frank T. Martinez and Jodie Roth Cooper. A handsome exhibit that takes full advantage of the gallery’s gorgeous interior, Modern Structure presents like an installation, juxtaposing paintings, sculpture and mixed-media works.
Laura Phelps Rogers: Home Economics
Pirate Contemporary Art
May 20 through June 5
Opening reception: 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 20
Installationist Laura Phelps Rogers continues in the vein of such previous shows as A Woman's Work Is Never Done and Wash Rinse Repeat, examining the changing concept of “women’s work” as it bridges the gap between outdated cultural expectations and newfound equality. Or does it? Additional points will be made in a companion invitational show in the Associates Gallery, Home Economics 101, comprising works that play off Phelps Rogers’s theme. The artist will give a talk on June 4, during a closing reception from 6 to 9 p.m.
Line of Thought: New Works by Jason Thielke and Rafa Jenn
Super Ordinary Gallery
Opening reception: 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 21
At Super Ordinary, catch art’s next wave at a two-person show of wall-ready eye candy from Jason Thielke and Rafa Jenn. Meet the artists and browse the boutique side of the venue at the opening; since it’s all inside the Source in RiNo, dinner and drinks are just steps away.
