The Denver Zine Library collects and shares a bounty of zines both local and national with the community; artist Dylan Scholinski’s Sent(a)mental Studios draws attention to individuals or groups affected by suicide through artwork and art therapy, particularly at-risk youth. Together, they share both community values and space at 27 Social Centre, 2727 West 27th Avenue. And that’s where the two organizations are teaming up tonight for a joint Denver Zine Library/Sent(a)mental Studios Silent Auction benefit featuring a wealth of pretty cool loot, including donated zine bundles, original artwork, gift certificates from local small businesses and more.

“Historically, this is our biggest fundraiser,” says the library’s Kelly Shortandqueer. “It’s a great way to connect with local artists and zinesters. Plus, every year I end up going home with something new — usually a piece of art — though I think I’m running out of room on my walls.”

This is the first year that Sent(a)mental Studios will share the auction’s rewards, which will help Scholinski continue to build his memorial to GLBTIQA suicide victims and survivors, as well as host open-studio events for youth. “I’ve always opened my studio unofficially to youth,” he says, adding that his goal is to try to help young people reclaim their strangled creative voices. In addition to the open studios, Scholinski officially helps facilitate six youth-suicide groups in the metro area.

The silent auction is from 7 to 9 p.m. and includes live music by Patrick Porter. Get details at www.denverzinelibrary.org/2010-silent-auction.
