This week Mayan elder Miguel Chiquin and Genaro Jucinto-Calel of the Mayan Nation of Guatemala are in town to set us straight, during a Mayan New Year residency at the Metropolitan State College Department of Chicano/a Studies on the Auraria campus.
Today, as part of the Journey to the 5th Sun -- a Mayan new year celebration -- Chiquin and Jucinto-Calel will give presentations in Tivoli 320AB at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.; on Wednesday, a free fire ceremony will be performed late in the afternoon.
"The Mayan community does not speak of the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012 as the end of the world, but rather that we are entering the calendar of the 5th Sun," Chiquin says. "We will also discuss the Mayan energies and what this means to us, including the 6 Knots energy vortexes which are opening now resulting in upheaval all over the world; i.e. fires, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, flooding, and how we can pool our energies to help balance these occurrences."
