Midnight in Paris, although an utterly watchable and engaging film, is like the cinematic version of Stuff White People Like.
Meanwhile "Niggas in Paris," which hit the 5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, is about the charmed careers of Kanye and Jay-Z: Attending Parisian fashion shows and 1-percenter soirees, but with years of street cred. "The sweet spot between the hood and Hollywood," Kayne has said.
Turns out the two are two great tastes that go great together.
Filmmaker and occasional Westword contributor Tim Davids mashed the two together for an engaging, possibly seizure-inducing video that ends in a psychedelic tailspin.
The short has received some blogger praise and love from nerd pillar/director of Scott Pilgram Edgar Wright, via Twitter.
Davids says he's gotten some heat from the video, though. "There's some dudes that did the same mash-up -- the same idea. less, presentation -- that also got a bunch of blog coverage. They were on Best Week Ever."
Still, Davids, who lives in Denver, says he didn't steal the idea, someone just beat him to the punch.
"It's the most obvious idea in the world, when I finally started I was still amazed no one had done it yet," Davids says. "[The other guys] tweeted it at me, too. I don't get why they're mad, to be honest -- last I checked, they had 45,000 views and I had 2,000."
Those numbers have gone up a lot since we spoke last night. But you make the call, which "Niggas in Paris at Midnight" video is better?
