Horse & Cart brings back its five-week Thursday-night playwrights' reality competition, The PlayOffs, with a brand new set of contestants from Colorado and across the nation. Each week, the playwrights riff on a theme with help from a local actor at breakneck speed; audience members vote on their favorites and eliminate losers, Project Runway-style. "These shows will be a blast simply because we have no idea what the writers are going to turn in," says Horse & Cart director Michael Emmitt. "We will literally get their weekly challenge submissions every Tuesday, rehearse on Wednesday and put the show up on Thursday." The last playwright standing walks off the stage with a $500 cash prize and the opportunity to have a work stage by Horse & Cart in the doing year.

The Central City Opera brings its big operatic voices to Denver for seven performances of this family-friendly rendition of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music. Directed by Ken Cazan (who also directed the CCO's modern opera Dead Man Walking this season), the classic will also feature a live orchestra and everybody's favorite songs, from "My Favorite Things" to the title ditty itself.
One Night Stand Theater, Tune in Tomorrow Vintage Theatre 7 p.m. August 3 $8
One Night Stand mines the Golden Age of Radio for this evening of live staged readings, complete with commercials. Titles include such riveting genre material as "The Black Figurine of Death" and "The Planet Man," as well as the company's own stab at radio scripting in two episodes of "One Night Stand Mystery."
