In the '60s, art happenings were all the rage. People got together to experience unique cultural gatherings that would never be repeated. Now RedLine is planning to provide Denver with a modern version of these aesthetic landmarks with its Artist's Studio series, which will feature events designed and facilitated by resident artists on Second Saturdays throughout 2013 and 2014.

"The purpose behind RedLine's Artist's Studio series is to create more opportunities for RedLine's members and visitors to have access to artists beyond what a museum and gallery setting can provide," says Louise Martorano, RedLine's deputy director. "Starting in May, each month will feature a different resident who will personally design the program that best expresses their studio practice and integrates opportunities for conversation between artist and audience. By year-end, attendees will have experienced a series of twelve different artists in twelve unique ways."

RedLine, which is located close to both the Ballpark neighborhood and RiNo art district, on the edge of Curtis Park, has become known for its focus on community involvement. Resident artists enjoy a two-year term that includes partially-subsidized studio space. In return, they are expected to participate in events and educational activities that benefit the public.

The first event, set for 6 to 8 p.m. this Saturday, May 11, will be a lecture and discussion titled "Aesthetics and Politics: The relationship between art, politics, and activism," led by resident artist Andre Daughtry. The conversation will touch on the teachings of French philosopher Jacques Rancière, who drew a link between art and politics through their effect on human perception.

Other featured artists in the series will include Justin Beard, Jaime Carrejo, Donald Fodness, Laura Shill, Chinn Wang, Katie Caron, Amber Cobb and Alvin Gregorio. Each will be given complete freedom to bring to life their own vision for an evening of thought-provoking activity and aesthetic stimulation. In the true tradition of art happenings, these one-of-a-kind experiences will depend on public participation; they'll only be fully understood by those who were there.

RedLine's Artist's Studio series will continue every Second Saturday through September 2014. Admission to each event is $10, free to gallery members. For more information, go to redlineart.org.
