Legendary Telluride ski bum "Captain Jack" Carey passed away on Lizard Head Pass last summer after a truck hit his bike. The New Hampshire transplant and Ophir resident was an world-class hang-glider, skier, biker, and hiker, and beloved by the community he'd been a big, smiling part of for over 30 years.

To commemorate the life and passion of Captain Jack, the Telluride Daily Planet reports that the Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club is dedicating its annual Ski-and-Board-a-Thon Saturday to the late local legend. Skiers and snowboarders are inking pledges and the club is providing faux foot-long graybeards for the occasion. The money that the club raises from the event will go to teaching area kids to ski and 'board -- Captain Jack would surely approve.

The record for the event is an impressive 34,000 vertical feet in four hours. But even if you can't make it down south for the big event, you can still pledge -- call the TSSC at 970-728-6163.

I leave you with this short Plum TV video about Captain Jack:
