Derived from the tradition of the Mexican carpa, a kind of traveling vaudeville tent show of politically driven street skits and comedy popular in border towns of the '20s and '30s, I Don't Speak English Only pokes updated fun at class wars that modern Latinos still live with. It's also Su Teatro's obvious choice as the opener for its fortieth anniversary season.
Expect broad, biting humor and lots of laughs -- the kind of chuckles that keep you from crying -- when I Don't Speak English Only premieres tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Denver Civic Theatre; the show continues on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, through October 14. Admission is $17 to $20 (If you request it, a two-for-one discount is offered on Thursdays); visit Su Teatro online or call 303-296-0219.
