Houndmouth

It’s been a tumultuous few years for Indiana’s Houndmouth, the roots-rock band that broke through in 2015 with the release of sophomore album Little Neon Limelight (and, more specifically, of wonderful first single “Sedona,” which is sure to make a few end-of-the-decade indie nostalgia playlists). Following the initial success of that record, the band parted ways with keyboardist Katie Toupin and reworked its lineup, adding two saxophone players, then went quiet prior to the release of last year’s Golden Age. At just 35 minutes, the record replaces the sweeping, big-hearted feeling of Little Neon Limelight with spiky, punctuated production (“Waiting for the Night”), of-the-moment, beat-heavy indie pop (“Coast to Coast”), and slow-moving synth lamentations (“Young Again”). This band is still Houndmouth, but Sedona has long since faded in the rearview mirror.
