A former member of Cadillac Sky, the folk guitarist left the band to pursue a solo career, which has brought him together -- both live and on record -- with Avett Brothers and his sister, fellow singer and instrumentalist, Jessica Lea Mayfield. Tomorrow night at Old Curtis Street, before they head out on tour, BLKHRTS are hosting a sacrificial ceremony with Turner Jackson officiating, 1984 serving as the drum corp, and Isis Speaks handling execution duties. A program, which you can get a gander at here, has been drawn up and everything, and wearing black is encouraged.Quickly becoming one of those Colorado summer institutions, Slightly Stoopid come back to Red Rocks Amphitheatre Saturday night with its Seedless Summer Tour 2011, also featuring Shwayze and Cisco Adler. These laid-back musicians bring the California-influenced rocksteady style to an always party-ready crowd. (6:30 p.m. doors, all ages, $37.50.)
If you're not feeling like a trek to Red Rocks for the night, The Crook's Coat headline an all-local throw down at Summit Music Hall in Lodo, supported by Faceman and Rubedo. The rock band's sound is strung together with a distinct country swing, which at times rambles south, but is definitely grounded in its Western guitar-heavy style. (8 p.m. doors, 21 & up, $5.)
Sunday night, Denver bands and friends come together at Rockaway Tavern to pay tribute to lovable local music scene giant Phillip "Phil the Fan" Hamon III, who passed away in June. Il Cattivo, Little Fyodor, Barstool Messiah and many, many more acts come together to raise money to offset the funeral costs for Hamon's family, and of course, to celebrate the life of Denver's biggest music fan. (3 p.m. doors, 21 & up, donation.)
Also on Sunday evening, multi-instrumentalist Keb' Mo' brings it to the Botanic Gardens for a gorgeous night on the grass. Making music off and on since the '70s, to witness the Los Angeles native is to take a step back in time -- the bluesman's voice is hearty and historical, it transcends modern musical trends with an earthy and rustic honesty. (6 p.m. doors, all ages, $57-62.)
