The Captain and the Red Hot Flames circa 1986.

Once upon a time, indefatigable self-promoter David Booker fronted The Captain and the Red Hot Flames, one of the most popular Colorado acts of the '80s -- and he's about to go back to the future. The group, also featuring saxophonist Sonny Gunn, drummer Kyle "Big Chief" Roberts, keyboardist Paul Mandrake and bassist Chris Harris, is reuniting for a Saturday, October 25 gig at Summit Steak and Seafood House, 2700 Havana Street, in Aurora (call 303-751-2112 for details). Booker, who boasts that he still has "my hair most of my teeth," promises a set loaded with old favorites, and adds that a second show is already scheduled: Saturday, January 24, at Oskar Blues. While you're marking your date books, take a look at a contemporary photo of Booker accompanying this recent Westword blurb. He's the one on the left. -- Michael Roberts
